Prime Day soon became a version of "Black Friday in July" for Amazon, allowing the retailer to have a branded 48-hour shopping extravaganza that occurs during an otherwise sleepy retail season. Unlike Black Friday, however, the Prime Day branding lets Amazon differentiate the summer sale from competitors and upsell Prime memberships and Amazon-branded hardware like Echo speakers and Fire tablets, which encourage customers to stay in the Amazon ecosystem. The fact that the sale also allows Amazon and its partners to clear out inventory and warehouse space ahead of the holiday shopping season doesn't hurt, either.

What's happening
Apple will be offering a new "Lockdown Mode" for its iPhones, iPads and Mac computers this fall. It's designed to fight advanced hacking and targeted spyware like the NSO Group's Pegasus.

The Penguins also signed goaltender Dustin Tokarski to a one-year contract worth $775,000, and defenseman Xavier Ouellet to a two-year, two-way deal worth an average annual value of $762,500 at the NHL level.

The event originally started as a 24-hour event that brought a bunch of big discounts to popular products across Amazon. After the first year, Amazon added an extra six hours to the event, making it 30 hours, but made the discounts during that time exclusive to voice shoppers who used Alexa to order the products. Amazon then increased it to a 36-hour event, and for the past few years Amazon has turned it into a full 48 hours (two days) of shopping fun for Prime Day.

A new team of antiheroes is apparently coming to town. The news dropped last week that Marvel has reportedly tapped Jake Schrier (Robot & Frank, Paper Towns) to direct a Thunderbolts movie, touted as basically Marvel's version of the Suicide Squad. Villains band together to complete missions dictated by the government.

Three years ago, Apple put up an ad in Las Vegas, showing the backside of one of its devices, with the phrase "What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone." It was a bold, if cheeky, claim. But Apple is increasingly living up to it.

"Josh was a huge addition to our back end down the stretch and into the playoffs," MacFarland said. "He played big minutes on our second pairing throughout the postseason, providing a tough, steady presence in the defensive zone while also contributing on the offensive end with some key goals.

Accordingly, Apple offers security features by default across the board to all its users. When people download Facebook for the first time and start using it on their phone, they're quickly greeted with popups asking whether they want to give the app access to their microphone or camera.

Meanwhile, many cybersecurity experts, including Susan Landau, are looking forward to trying out Lockdown Mode when Apple releases it in the fall, along with its annual set of major software upgrades. A cybersecurity and policy professor at Tufts University, and a former employee at Google and Sun Microsystems, Landau is already careful about what websites she visits and what devices she uses. She keeps a separate Google Chromebook for handling her finances, and she refuses to download most apps to her phone unless she knows she can trust the company that made them.

While there's little known about what Marvel's Thunderbolts will entail, the beginning of June brought She-Hulk's release date. The series will premiere on Disney Plus on Wednesday, Aug. 17. We also have a first trailer, which reveals what Tatiana Maslany's hero looks like. (Spoiler: She's green.)

The tech giant has been ramping up its commitments to privacy and security with a string of new features that cybersecurity experts say are amounting to more than a bullet-point feature to differentiate its products from Samsung gadgets and other devices powered by Google's Android OS. Instead, Apple's moves have sent ripples through the advertising world and upset government officials -- signs, tech watchers say, that Apple is following through on its promises.

Manson, 30, recorded 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) in 67 games last season split between the Anaheim Ducks and Avalanche. He totaled seven points (two goals, five assists) in 22 games with the Avalanche after being acquired from the Ducks on March 14.

"He is incredibly versatile, can play anywhere up and down the lineup. He has a non-stop motor and #FistFight never takes a shift off. He's really smart, highly competitive, knows his role no matter what is asked of him.

"I didn't play with the confidence I usually have. It was good learning experience, and I feel coming out of it I probably played (some) of my best hockey here at the end. So, I'm really exciting bring that into next year, for sure."

"It's convenience versus security," she said. Landau follows these protocols out of principle, because she -- like nearly all of us -- doesn't have the time or capability to validate every app or website's safety. Apple and Google both have established security tests for their respective app stores, but Landau said the new apps, capabilities and upgrades that arrive each year can make them more vulnerable. "Complexity is the bane of security."
